✘ The role of Mariah Samson is [Open]
Mariah is a nearly polar opposite of her mother. Exciting and outgoing, she uses her sleazy appearance to make herself look stupid, bringing men to their bedroom before drugging them and taking their money, then getting the hell out of there. She often poses as a prostitute, and doesn’t realize the danger it puts her in, especially with the Lafayette family. She’s incredibly kind if you get to know her, an avid gamer with a wide taste in music. Mariah doesn’t realize that she’s actually scaring people off with her almost freakishly outgoing attitude, and thinks that the more attention, wether negative or positive, she gets, the better.
When Mariah was born, her adoptive mother Willa did not go easy on her. From her early years, Mariah was taught the importance of money, of how to tell a counterfeit dollar from a real one, of how to pickpocket, and most of all, she was taught the difference between good music and bad. Willa spoiled Mariah, despite the fact that she forced Mariah to dress up as a homeless and beg for money. It was all for the greater good, Willa reasoned to Mariah. When she wasn’t out trying to bring in more money for her mother’s business, Mariah attended high school, becoming close friends with Darren Glover, despite the fact that Willa insisted that she stay away from the other boy. They never passed the platonic, and passed a great amount of time playing games together.
She never told him her secret, about the faux prostitution and the stealing, instead saying that she was in a band. This only held up so long, and he soon demanded a performance. So when Mariah preformed for him, and it was actually decent, they were both surprised. The two even contemplated a band, but it never happened, mostly because they both knew that it was largely forbidden for them to even talk. The rift between them continued to grow bigger, and they drifted apart. Mariah hated it more than she was willing to admit, as Darren had been her first real friend, but she kept it to herself.
After the excommunication between them, she moved on to work even harder for Willa, dropping the memory of her performance and the friendship between her and Darren, and dropping out of high school and working even more intensely for her mother, getting bootleg games and translating them, robbing game stores at gunpoint, burning down record stores— anything and everything to make sure that Musique Antique was the last store standing, and the best one at that. Her entire life became surrounded by her obsession with work, which had been used to fill the hole that a failed friendship had caused.
When she heard of the New Threat, Mariah didn’t flinch. She took it up as another challenge, and decided that she would find who headed it and destroy them, just as she had destroyed everything else. During the times that she isn’t helping her family, she’s usually playing one of the games she stole or shopping at one of the few boutiques that are found in Norman. She fears nothing and never takes no for an answer, but would still do anything to get her friendship with Darren back. Although she doesn’t love him, she still misses knowing a guy who didn’t want her for sex or cheap laughs. She honestly wants normal, and if she can’t have it, she’ll make sure no one else can, either.
